About Us

Count Catula's

Count Catula’s is the first officially registered Transylvanian cattery with the World Cat Federation (WCF), proudly dedicated to the preservation and development of this unique and historic breed.

Founded and owned by Beverly Elian, an international WCF Allbreed Judge, Count Catula’s represents the heart and origin of the Transylvanian breed. Beverly Elian authored the original breed standard, introducing the distinctive “Carpati” (reverse roan) pattern that has become the hallmark of the Transylvanian cat.

Based in Bucharest, Romania, and registered under WCF through Magnificats Club RO-028 MAG, Count Catula’s serves as the main international reference point for the breed’s development and its novice recognition within the WCF.

Our Mission

Our mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the Transylvanian cat breed through ethical breeding, education, and international collaboration. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, temperament, and authenticity while honoring the breed’s rich cultural and genetic heritage.

Our Services

The Transylvanian Breed

The Transylvanian has been part of local life in the Carpathian Mountains region for centuries. Villagers describe them as reserved, loyal and deeply attached to their human families. Their striking Carpati pattern, a salt-and-pepper effect (roan) all over their bodies, with bright contrasts on their ears, nose, paws and tail – has earned them the reputation of being ‘cats painted by the mountains’. In folklore, they are considered guardians of thresholds and symbols of balance. Although not bred in palaces or catteries, they were valuedcompanions of farmers, shepherds and forest dwellers.
The Transylvanian is not an artificially created breed, but a naturally occurring population that has long been native to the Carpathian Mountains and the Eastern European lowlands. For generations, these cats have lived alongside shepherds and villagers, adapting to life in the mountains and forming strong bonds with humans. Our task was to responsibly preserve, standardise and document them.

Kittens & Breeding

These cats first came to attention not through breeders, but through researchers and travelers who recognized their uniqueness and harmony with their environment. Over centuries, they adapted to mountain life with silent resilience: muscular yet slender, strong but never coarse, elegant and haunting in their expression. In local folklore, they were thought to guard the thresholds between the seen and unseen—symbols of balance, guardians of silence.
Special Characteristics Temperament. The Transylvanian is a naturally gentle and nonaggressive cat. Even the foundation cats that were rescued feral cats could be handled easily and they were/are very trusting. Subsequent generations, where Transylvanian were bred to Transylvanian, they have continued with the gentle, kind temperaments.
Pattern: Carpati (roan effect). Kittens are born very lightly coloured; the pattern develops gradually over the course of the first year. The Carpati pattern is dominant, thought to be heat sensitive.
Colour variations:– Black Carpati and Blue Carpati.
