Mutation · Development · Genetics

The Carpati mutation.

A naturally occurring roan-like phenotype characterised by a salt-and-pepper body, pale contrast on the extremities and a striking transformation from very pale kitten to mature adult.

Observed across Central & Eastern Europe · genetic basis under investigation

Black Carpati Transylvanian cat

Geographic range

A natural mutation across a wide region.

Cats exhibiting the Carpati mutation have been observed in Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Czechia and Slovakia. This distribution belongs to the mutation — not to the definition of the Transylvanian breed.

Visual signature

Salt-and-pepper body. Pale points of contrast.

The mature coat shows a roan effect across the body, while the nose, ears, paws and tail carry much paler contrast. Pale ear furnishings and whiskers are desirable in the proposed standard.

  • Short coat with a slight lift
  • Very pale grey to grey contrast
  • Roan effect over the body
  • Contrast on mask, ears, legs, paws and tail
  • Full expression develops progressively through the first year

Colour development

The mutation emerges.

The transformation is one of the most distinctive features of the Carpati phenotype.

Birth
Very pale Carpati kitten

Very pale colouring

Paw pads and nose leather indicate whether the future base colour is black or blue-grey.

~2 months
Young Carpati cat developing contrast

Contrast begins

The ears, nose, paws and tail tip begin to separate visually from the body.

Junior
Blue Carpati junior

Roan body develops

The “salt and pepper” effect becomes increasingly evident.

Adult
Adult Blue Carpati

Mature expression

The complete colour is not considered finished until at least one year of age.

Accepted colour

Scientific status

Observed inheritance is being studied; the causal variant is not yet identified.

Prof. Leslie A. Lyons first requested samples of cats exhibiting the Carpati mutation from Beverly Elian for genetic investigation and has remained a scientific adviser throughout the development of the Transylvanian breed. The precise causal gene or variant remains unresolved, and the mutation’s presumed heat sensitivity should be treated as a working hypothesis rather than established fact.
