The recognition story is the sequence by which Beverly Elian identified a specific Romanian type, built a breeding programme around it, documented a standard and carried the Transylvanian through provisional recognition to full WCF recognition on 23 August 2026.
The sequence matters
The documented foundation cats came from western and sub-Carpathian Romania, including areas close to the Romanian–Hungarian border. The Carpati phenotype can plausibly cross that political border; additional project reports from elsewhere in the broader region remain anecdotal and have not been systematically mapped.
Karpati-pattern cats enter genetic research. In 2024, a peer-reviewed Animal Genetics paper co-authored by Prof. Leslie A. Lyons reports genotyping one Karpati-pattern cat from Romania and one from the UK; the newly identified salmiak allele was absent in both. The University of Missouri now separately lists “Transylvanian cats – defining the Karpati coloration and pattern” as an active project.
Beverly Elian independently decides to establish a breed from a particular type she identified in western and sub-Carpathian Romania.
The programme selects for conformation, temperament, health and consistent expression of the Carpati phenotype — not merely for an unusual coat.
The type was documented in the breed standard used through WCF’s recognition process. WCF’s public archive records the breed in the recognition process in 2021, followed by provisional recognition and the 2026 General Assembly decision.
The WCF General Assembly approved the Transylvanian with 71 votes out of 83. The breed is approved for Championship competition. In a separate related decision, the Carpati mutation was approved for Championship with 67 votes out of 88, exclusively for the Transylvanian.
GCCF · United Kingdom
In October 2024, GCCF approved Breed Name recognition for the Transylvanian following recommendation from its Genetics Committee. GCCF currently lists TRL / TRS as Transylvanian Longhair / Shorthair under Breed Name Recognition Only. This is the first stage of the GCCF pathway and is not Championship recognition.

The purpose
“Preserve, standardise and document.”
The breed-recognition presentation frames the project as the responsible preservation and documentation of a naturally rooted population, while the specific breed identity emerges from Beverly Elian’s selection programme.
Recognition without confusion
For judges, breeders and journalists, this remains the most important historical distinction. Project observations suggest that the Carpati phenotype may have a broader sub-Carpathian distribution, but this geographic record is anecdotal and has not been systematically mapped. The Transylvanian is a defined breed programme developed from a particular Romanian foundation type.
The scientific record is treated the same way: evidence about Karpati-pattern cats is not automatically described as evidence validating the Transylvanian breed.

The 23 August 2026 General Assembly result is now the controlling WCF status: full recognition of the Transylvanian, 71 votes out of 83, with the Carpati mutation approved for Championship by 67 votes out of 88, exclusively for this breed.
