Scientific advice throughout development
Her involvement began with scientific interest in the naturally occurring Carpati mutation. Prof. Lyons asked Beverly Elian for samples for genetic investigation and subsequently remained a scientific adviser as the Transylvanian breed was selected, documented and developed.
The Carpati mutation is seen over a broad geography — Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Czechia and Slovakia. Beverly’s decision to establish the Transylvanian as a breed from a specific western Romanian type, and the selection programme that followed, were independently hers; Prof. Lyons’ role has been scientific advice throughout that development.

University of Missouri. Prof. Lyons has been a scientific adviser throughout the development of the Transylvanian breed. Her involvement began when she requested samples of cats exhibiting the Carpati mutation for genetic investigation and continued as the breed was selected, documented and developed. The decision to establish the breed from a specific Romanian type and the selective-development programme were Beverly Elian’s own work.

The WCF breed-recognition presentation names Prof. Marie Abitbol alongside Prof. Lyons among the recognised experts connected with the genetic studies.
Editorial principle
Do not describe the Carpati mutation as genetically “dominant” or “recessive” as settled fact while the causal variant is unresolved.
Do not confuse the geographic distribution of the mutation with the origin of the Transylvanian breed-development programme.
State when a conclusion is observational, when it is supported by testing, and when it remains a hypothesis.
