23 August 2026: the WCF General Assembly approved full recognition of the Transylvanian breed with 71 votes out of 83.
In a related decision, the Carpati mutation was approved for Championship competition with 67 votes out of 88, exclusively for the Transylvanian breed. The registry decision establishes the accepted Championship phenotype; it does not identify the causal DNA variant, which remains under active genetic study.
What changes now
- The Transylvanian moves from provisional recognition to full WCF recognition and Championship competition.
- Black Carpati and Blue Carpati remain the recognized colour expressions of the breed standard.
- The Carpati mutation is approved for Championship use specifically in the Transylvanian rather than as a general colour designation across breeds.
What does not change
- The Carpati phenotype is broader than the Transylvanian breed programme.
- The causal gene or variant has not yet been published.
- A definitive inheritance mode and a proven temperature-sensitive mechanism remain open research questions.
